Paseo del Mar: Inside Torrevieja's €100M Port Transformation

The story behind Torrevieja's €100M port transformation - what Paseo del Mar was built to be - now updated for its June 2026 opening.

Update - June 2026: Paseo del Mar opened on 11 June 2026, a little later than the late-May date mentioned below. For a full rundown of what actually opened - the shops, restaurants, cinema, bowling and sea-view terraces - read our guide: Paseo del Mar: Torrevieja's new waterfront is open. What follows is our original preview, written before the doors opened.

One of the Biggest Things to Happen to Torrevieja in Years Is About a Month Away

If you live in or around Torrevieja, or you're planning to visit in the next few months, pay attention - the port is about to change completely.

Late May 2026 is the scheduled opening of Paseo Del Mar, the new public waterfront complex built on what used to be a largely closed-off area of the port. We're talking fish industry, parking lots, general non-access. Now it's being turned into the social and commercial centre of the city.

This isn't a small renovation. More than 100 million euros have gone into this project. The EU and the Spanish government contributed over 50 million, with the rest coming from private European investors. The scale of it puts it among the more significant urban development projects in Spain in recent years.

What Paseo Del Mar Actually Is

The Commercial and Entertainment Complex

The main building covers 20,000 m2 of the former port zone, with 8,500 m2 set aside for commercial rental space. Around 27 fashion and retail stores are planned, alongside a multi-screen cinema, bowling, restaurants, cafes, bars, and terraces looking out over the sea.

This is the first full entertainment complex in Torrevieja that sits right in the port - not tucked away in a shopping mall on the edge of town. Evening life in the city is going to look different after this opens.

The Public Waterfront and Promenade

The embankment area expands to around 49,000 m2 and becomes fully pedestrianised. No cars. The new layout includes bike paths, green areas, observation decks, bridges and ramps for easy access, and a direct connection into the city centre with modern transport links.

Think of what the ports in Valencia or Alicante have become for those cities - places where people actually go, not just pass through. That's the direction Torrevieja is heading.

Events and Street Life

There's a dedicated area for concerts and public events, fairs and festivals, street entertainment, and a hippie market with around 150 craft stalls. The plan is year-round activity - not just something that runs for a few weeks in summer and then goes quiet.

A separate gastronomic zone will have sea-view restaurants, outdoor kitchens, cafes, bars, pubs, and clubs. The aim is to make the port the anchor of Torrevieja's evening and cultural life across all four seasons.

Practical Notes

  • Parking. Underground parking across two garages is already open. Pricing at the time of writing was unusually cheap for a central location - worth checking the current rate on arrival.
  • Location. Paseo Del Mar is located in the Centro district of Torrevieja, right at the port. Address: Centro, 03181 Torrevieja, Alicante, Spain.
  • Year-round use. This is being built for all seasons, not just tourist summer. If you're based in the area long-term, that matters.
