Alicante weekend guide, 2 to 4 October 2026: Mahler, Spike Lee, karaoke

The first weekend of October is a good time to be in Alicante. The summer machine has wound down, the evenings have cooled off, and the indoor season has properly started: Spain's national orchestra is in town, there's a theatre premiere at Las Cigarreras, and someone will be playing gongs on Playa de San Juan. Here's what's actually on, grouped so you can decide fast.

Worth prioritising: Mahler at the ADDA

If you only do one thing this weekend, do this. On Saturday 3 October the Orquesta Nacional de España plays the ADDA under conductor Pablo González, pairing Óscar Esplá's "El sueño de Eros" with Mahler's Symphony No. 5. Esplá is the local angle here - he's the Alicante-born composer the ADDA's main hall is named after - and the Mahler is the draw: it's the symphony with the Adagietto you've heard in films even if you can't place the name.

You don't get Spain's national orchestra on your doorstep most weekends, and the ADDA is the best room in the city to hear one. One honest caveat: this is a long evening of serious orchestral music. If your attention taps out twenty minutes into anything, it's not your night.

Also on Saturday 3 October, the council's agenda lists Vuelve Shhh#6, a double concert. The listing is thin on detail, so treat it as the wildcard rather than the plan.

Friday 2 October: four options, pick a lane

Friday is the crowded night. Everything below happens on the same evening, so you're choosing by mood, not by schedule.

Culture, in Spanish

Las Cigarreras, the arts centre in the old tobacco factory, hosts the premiere of "Había Luz pero no era nuestra" on Friday 2 October, part of the Alacant a Escena season - the council's own listing has the official line. Fair warning: the listing is in Spanish and, presumably, so is the play. If a full evening of Spanish-language theatre sounds more like homework than fun, there's a film the same night.

That film is Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing from 1989, showing as "Haz lo que debas" at the Centro Municipal de Las Artes. It screens under the Cinema al Coixí banner, part of the council's Cultura en Barrios programme - the name means "cinema on a cushion", which tells you how seriously to dress. A Brooklyn classic in a municipal arts centre is a solid low-effort Friday, though check the listing rather than assuming the screening language.

Switch off completely

Down at the beach, Friday 2 October also brings an international gong bath on Playa de San Juan, in the chiringuito SIDI zone at C. Algas Marinas, 1. If you've never done one: you lie down, someone plays gongs over you, and that's the whole deal. Early October is the right month for it - the crowds are gone and the sand no longer burns. It's not for cynics, and it knows that.

Get loud instead

If none of that lands, there's karaoke at La Isla, also Friday 2 October. No further analysis needed. You already know whether you're a karaoke person.

The weekday warm-up: PalmeraTech in Elche

If you work in tech or you're one of the city's many laptop people, PalmeraTech 2026 runs Thursday 1 October and Friday 2 October at the Centro de Congresos "Ciutat d'Elx" in Elche. The listing doesn't give much away, but the name does. Elche is roughly half an hour away, and the commuter train beats hunting for parking near a congress centre. The obvious catch: it's a weekday event, so it only works if you can call it work.

Sunday 4 October: nothing listed, and that's fine

The agenda goes quiet on Sunday 4 October. Take the hint. The sea is still warm in early October and the beaches have handed back the space the tourists were using - Postiguet if you want easy, San Juan if you want a proper stretch of sand. And if the weekend leaves you wanting more structure in your week, the caregiver workshops in Zona Este start on 6 October, and Basic-Fit exists for anyone who found the gong bath too gentle.

One practical call: sort your ADDA tickets first and build the rest of the weekend around them. Everything else here can be decided on the day.
