CIRCO Playa San Juan: the real verdict on the circus restaurant

Circus decor, serious seafood, and a 4.6 from 2,615 reviews on the Playa San Juan beachfront. Who it's for and who should skip it.

Playa San Juan's beachfront has a long line of places to eat, and most of them blur together by the time you're back at the tram stop. CIRCO is the one people remember. It's a restaurant dressed up like a circus that still takes the cooking seriously, and 2,615 Google reviews have it sitting on a 4.6.

What you're walking into

CIRCO Playa San Juan sits at Av. de la Costa Blanca 128, on the beachfront. The theme is exactly what the name promises: circus-inspired decor and a room built to be playful without tipping into theme park. Underneath it the food is Mediterranean, with fresh seafood doing a lot of the work on the menu.

Themed restaurants usually make me suspicious. Most use the gimmick to cover for average cooking. The numbers say CIRCO isn't doing that here. A 4.6 is a good score anywhere. Holding it across 2,615 reviews is the hard part - that's thousands of people who came for the spectacle and left agreeing the plates held up too.

Same category, completely different moods

To place it, here are two other restaurants from our directory, both down the coast in Torrevieja. Same category on paper, nothing alike in person:

  • Casa Del Mar is the quiet opposite. It sits away from the busier restaurant strips and feels like dinner at a friend's place by the sea. If a themed room sounds like hard work, start here instead.
  • Bibliotekcafé isn't competing on dinner at all. It's a café built around a library on Calle Ramón Gallud, books in several languages on the walls, no television anywhere - one of the calmer places to sit in town. Go for a slow coffee, not a big night.

CIRCO is the loud one of the three, and that's the point of it. You're going for the room as much as the food.

One number to trust, one to ignore

Quick directory maths. Casa Del Mar shows a perfect 5.0 - from exactly 3 reviews. That's not a rating, that's three good nights. CIRCO's 4.6 across two and a half thousand opinions tells you much more about how your own evening will probably go. When you're picking between places you've never set foot in, trust the big sample.

Who it's for, and who should skip it

Book CIRCO for birthdays, visiting friends you want to give a proper night out, or kids who won't sit through a white-tablecloth dinner. Skip it for a quiet anniversary or any meal where you mainly want to talk - a playful room is rarely a hushed one.

Two practical notes. This stretch of Playa San Juan gets rammed in high summer, and parking near Av. de la Costa Blanca is a fight in July and August, so the tram is the smarter way in. And a place with this many reviews is not a secret - book ahead instead of strolling up at 9pm on a Saturday and hoping.

If you'd rather have the beach-town dinner without the show, read our guide to La Sal Bistro in El Campello. If the night's ending in Alicante city instead, there's always the rooftop at Boga Sky Lounge.

Book the table, take the tram, and let the room do the rest.
