If Pelican isn't your thing
Not everyone wants a beach terrace. If you're after somewhere calm, Bibliotekcafé in Torrevieja is a café built around a library. Books line the walls in several languages, many donated by customers, and there's no television. It's doing a completely different job to Pelican, and that's the point.
Casa Del Mar, also in Torrevieja, keeps things intimate and sits away from the busier restaurant strips. Just know that both of these are a proper drive down the coast, not a same-evening swap for Playa San Juan. If you'd rather stay on this beach and eat something different, Baobab in Playa de San Juan is in the same neighbourhood and a whole other conversation.
The verdict
Pelican is the safe pick on Playa San Juan, in the best sense. The review volume says you'll eat well, and the terrace means you'll enjoy sitting there while you do. It's not the spot for a quiet, undiscovered lunch, and seafront terraces on this avenue are never the budget option. Go knowing that and you'll have a good time.
