Mercadillo de Altabix (Elche)

This is the Altabix street market in Elche, held every Wednesday morning on Calle Alginet. It's the biggest of the city's weekday neighbourhood markets and a proper local shop rather than a tourist affair, so go if you want to stock up and see Elche going about its week. The council lists 86 stalls, running from 8.30am to 2pm. Food is the main draw: fruit and veg, olives and pickles, cheese and herbalist stalls. Mixed in with those you'll find clothes, shoes and small gift items. Get there earlier in the morning for the best produce and a calmer stroll between the stalls. Bring a shopping bag and pair it with a coffee in Altabix afterwards. It's handy if you live on the east side of Elche, or if you're visiting the city midweek and want something more everyday than the Palmeral.
