El Bodegón

El Bodegón is one of Calpe's old-school restaurants, open since 1976 on Calle Delfín in the town centre, and it's the place for traditional Spanish cooking in a proper rustic dining room. The Díaz family have run it for around three decades and it has a loyal local following. The kitchen leans on fish and vegetables from Calpe's own fish market. Look for the zarzuela seafood stew and the Llauna de Calp, a local baked fish dish, or go for meat: chateaubriand or roast shoulder of lamb. Desserts are crêpe suzette and homemade cakes, and the wine list sticks mostly to Valencian and Spanish producers. Inside it's all whitewashed walls, hanging hams, wine barrels and a bit of a Don Quijote theme, so it feels a world away from the seafront bars. Prices are mid-range. It's closed on Sundays, and it's worth ringing ahead to book in high season.
