El Pegolí

El Pegolí is a family-run seafood restaurant in Les Rotes, just south of Dénia, and it's the place locals send you for Dénia red prawns eaten a few metres from the water. It started life as a little beach bar back in 1943 and it's still all about doing a short list of things really well. Order the red prawns, the grilled squid and a rice: arroz a banda or arroz del senyoret are the ones people rave about. The decor's simple and the terrace sits right by the rocky shore, so the view does the decorating for you. It's a relaxed spot for families too. It isn't cheap. Prawns are priced by the piece and the bill climbs fast, though most reviewers reckon it's worth it, and staff are upfront about prices. Weekends fill up, so book. Parking along Les Rotes is tight and there's no car park of its own, and one or two people found the welcome at the door a bit brusque.
