Alicante tram to Benidorm, step by step
1. Go to Luceros (or Mercado)
Line 1 starts at Luceros, under the big roundabout with the fountain on Plaza de los Luceros. The entrances are around the square and the platforms are underground. If you're nearer the market, Mercado station on Avenida Alfonso el Sabio is the next stop along, and MARQ-Castillo after that. Getting on at Luceros has one big advantage: you get first pick of the seats.
2. Buy the right ticket
Use the machines at the station. Pick Benidorm as your destination and it'll charge you for two zones. Zone A runs from Luceros to Poble Espanyol (all of Alicante and most of El Campello), and zone B from Amerador up to l'Olla de Altea, which covers Villajoyosa and Benidorm.
3. Validate before you board
Tap or feed your ticket into the validator on the platform before you get on. Inspectors do check, and "I didn't know" won't get you far.
4. Get on the right tram
At Luceros, look at the screens for L1 Benidorm. This is the classic mistake: line 3 runs along exactly the same coast but stops at El Campello, and line 4 peels off to Playa de San Juan. If you get on at Mercado or MARQ, check it says Benidorm and not Luceros, or you'll end up back where you started.
5. Sit on the right
Heading north, the sea is on your right. Coming back to Alicante, sit on the left. The first stretch runs through the city and the beach suburbs, and the good bit starts after El Campello, where the line runs above rocky coves on the way to Villajoyosa.
6. Get off at Benidorm (or Benidorm Intermodal)
The line ends at the Benidorm stop, and some trams carry on one more stop to Benidorm Intermodal, next to the bus station. Neither is on the beach. For most Levante or old town hotels you'll want a taxi, a local bus or a decent walk, so check your route before you set off.
Stops worth knowing on the way
- Playa de San Juan: Costa Blanca, Carrabiners and Muchavista sit behind the long beach. If you're heading for the restaurants on Avenida de Niza, line 4 drops you closer. Our San Juan guide and where to eat and drink in Playa de San Juan have the details.
- El Campello: get off at El Campello for the seafront and the old watchtower. It's a good lunch stop. We liked La Sal Bistro, and our La Sal Bistro review explains why. More in the El Campello guide.
- Villajoyosa: La Vila Joiosa stop for the town centre and the painted houses on the seafront. See the Villajoyosa guide.
- Terra Mítica: for the theme parks. They open seasonally, so check before you go.
Fares and tickets (October 2026)
Fares changed on 1 October 2026 and FGV's own fares page is the place to check the exact figure. Here's what we could confirm:
- Inside Alicante's zone A (the TAM area), a single is now €1.50.
- A one-zone single outside the TAM area went up from €1.45 to €2.
- Alicante to Benidorm is a two-zone trip. A two-zone single was €2.80 before October 2026 and singles rose with the change, so expect to pay a bit more now. The machine shows the exact price.
- A Bono 10 (ten trips loaded onto a rechargeable Móbilis card) works out far cheaper per trip. The Generalitat's 40% discount on multi-trip tickets runs until 31 December 2026.
- Under-14s travel free on Generalitat transport.
If you're doing the trip more than once, or there are two of you, get the card. You'll make it back on the second day.
Timetable: how often, first and last trams
Line 1 runs every 30 minutes through the day. Between Luceros and El Campello, lines 1 and 3 together give you a tram every 15 minutes, which helps if you're only going to the beach. The first tram from Luceros is around 05:34 on weekdays and 06:04 on Sundays. The last one to Benidorm leaves at around 22:04 and the last one back from Benidorm at around 22:05. Those times come from the FGV timetable as listed on AliBus, so check the TRAM app on the day.
In summer there's the TRAMnochador, a late service on Friday and Saturday nights that includes line 1. In 2026 it ran from 3 July to 29 August. Next summer's dates get announced around June.
Luggage, crowds and the practical bits
- A suitcase is fine, but this is a commuter tram, so at rush hour or on a summer Saturday a big case is a pain for you and everyone else. Coming from the airport with heavy bags, the direct airport bus is the easier way to Benidorm.
- Keep your bag in front of you when it's packed. Normal city stuff.
- Ticket machines can be temperamental, so have a bit of cash on you as backup.
- After heavy rain, check the TRAM app or social media before you leave. Services do get interrupted.
Missed the last tram?
Don't panic. ALSA's Benidorm to Alicante buses run much later than the tram: the last regular one leaves Benidorm bus station at 23:15, and there are night departures at 00:30, 02:15 and 04:30. The trip takes about 40 to 45 minutes. Going the other way, ALSA also runs later than the tram, so check alsa.es for times. Failing that, it's a taxi.
Carrying on past Benidorm
At Benidorm you can change to line 9 for Altea, Calpe and Dénia. It runs roughly hourly, so time your connection. Our Altea day trip by tram walks you through it, and the full Alicante tram guide covers every line.
