Alicante Tram Guide: Every Line, Tickets & Day Trips by Tram
Every TRAM line in plain English, what tickets cost now, and the best day trips up the coast by tram.
The Alicante tram is the easiest way to get up the coast without a car. Six lines run out of the city: line 1 to Benidorm, line 9 on from Benidorm to Altea, Calpe and Dénia, plus four shorter lines to the beaches and the university. A single inside Alicante costs €1.50, and longer trips are priced by zone.
Quick facts
- Operator: FGV (Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat Valenciana). Timetables at tramalacant.es, customer line 900 72 04 72.
- Main hub: Luceros, under Plaza de los Luceros. Every line except 5 and 9 calls there.
- Zones: three. A is the Alicante area, B runs from Villajoyosa to Altea, C from Calpe to Dénia.
- Fares (from 1 October 2026): €1.50 single inside zone A, €2 for a one-zone single elsewhere, more for longer trips.
- Kids: under-14s travel free on Generalitat transport.
- No tram to the airport. Use the C-6 bus.
Every line, explained simply
| Line | Route | Useful for | How often (roughly) |
|---|---|---|---|
| L1 | Luceros - Benidorm | El Campello, Villajoyosa, Terra Mítica, Benidorm | Every 30 min |
| L2 | Luceros - Sant Vicent del Raspeig | The University of Alicante | Every 8-15 min |
| L3 | Luceros - El Campello | Albufereta, the San Juan and Muchavista beach stops | With L1, every 15 min to El Campello |
| L4 | Luceros - Plaza La Coruña | Cabo de las Huertas, Playa de San Juan | Around every 30 min |
| L5 | Puerta del Mar - Plaza La Coruña | Postiguet beach to Playa de San Juan | Around every 30 min |
| L9 | Benidorm - Dénia | Albir, Altea, Calpe, Benissa, Teulada, Gata, Dénia | Roughly hourly |
A couple of things that confuse people. Lines 1 and 3 share the same coastal track as far as El Campello, so check the screen says the right one. Line 9 doesn't go into Alicante at all. It starts in Benidorm, and since 28 January 2025 it runs all the way to Dénia with no change, on newer dual-power trains, after the Algar and Mascarat viaducts were rebuilt.
Zones and tickets
The network has three fare zones, set out by FGV when it simplified the old six-zone map:
- Zone A: Luceros to Poble Espanyol. That's Alicante city, Sant Vicent and most of El Campello.
- Zone B: Amerador to l'Olla de Altea. Villajoyosa, Benidorm, l'Alfàs del Pi and Altea.
- Zone C: Calp to Dénia.
There are two "transition" stretches, Pla Barraques to Costera Pastor in the south and Altea to Benissa in the north. A trip that stays inside one of them counts as one zone. So Alicante to Benidorm or Altea is two zones, and Alicante to Calpe or Dénia is three.
What it costs, as far as we could confirm in October 2026:
- Single inside zone A: €1.50 (it was €1.45 until 30 September 2026).
- One-zone single elsewhere: €2 (up from €1.45).
- Two and three-zone singles: these also went up on 1 October. Before that they were €2.80 and €3.90. Check the machine or tramalacant.es for today's figure.
- Bono 10: ten trips loaded onto a rechargeable Móbilis card. The one-zone version now costs €5.40, which is 54 cents a trip. The Generalitat's 40% discount on multi-trip tickets is guaranteed until 31 December 2026.
- Monthly unlimited: new from October 2026, the Abono Móbilis Mensual costs €35 for 30 days of unlimited travel in the Alicante TAM area. Handy for long-stay winter visitors.
- 24-hour ticket: there is one, and it went up in October 2026. Ask at Luceros if you're planning a big day out.
Inside zone A, a Móbilis multi-trip ticket also lets you change between tram and city bus within 60 minutes of first validating. A paper single doesn't.
How to buy and use a ticket
- Buy from the machines at the stations. You can get the Móbilis card itself from the TAM office or the Luceros information point, and top it up at the machines.
- Validate before you get on. Inspectors do check.
- Have a bit of cash on you in case a card reader is playing up.
- For live times, use the official TRAM d'Alacant app or the planner at tramalacant.es.
Day trips by tram
Altea
The best tram day out from Alicante. Line 1 to Benidorm, change to line 9, get off at Altea and walk up to the white old town and the blue-domed church. Two zones each way. Our Altea day trip by tram has the step-by-step, and the Altea area guide has places to eat.
Calpe
Stay on line 9 past Altea to the Calp stop. This is the scenic stretch, through the Mascarat tunnels and over the gorge. The stop isn't on the seafront, so check the walk to the beach or the rock on a map first. If you're going to climb it, read hiking the Peñón de Ifach before you go. More in the Calpe guide.
Dénia
The end of line 9, and a long day: allow around three hours each way from Alicante, depending on how well your connection at Benidorm lines up. Worth it if you stay for a proper lunch. Our Peix & Brases review is a good place to start, and the Dénia guide has the rest.
Benidorm, Villajoyosa and El Campello
All on line 1 with no change. El Campello is a half-day, Villajoyosa a lazy lunch with the painted houses, Benidorm a full day. Our Alicante to Benidorm by tram guide covers that line stop by stop.
Not on the tram: Jávea and Elche. Jávea needs a bus or a car (see our Jávea day trip guide).
Timing tips
- Line 9 is roughly hourly and line 1 every 30 minutes, so look up the line 9 time before you leave Alicante. A badly timed change in Benidorm can cost you 45 minutes.
- The last line 1 tram from Benidorm back to Alicante leaves around 22:05. If you're coming back from Calpe or Dénia, work backwards from that.
- In summer, the TRAMnochador adds late trams on Friday and Saturday nights. In 2026 it ran from 3 July to 29 August and included line 9 between Benidorm and Altea.
- After heavy rain, check the app before setting off.
Tram or bus?
For Alicante to Benidorm, the ALSA bus is quicker at around 45 minutes against 80 on the tram. The tram wins on views, on being able to hop off at El Campello or Villajoyosa, and on price if you've got a Bono 10. For Altea, Calpe and Dénia, the tram's coastal route is the reason to go. FAQ
Can you get the tram from Alicante to Altea?
Yes. Take line 1 from Luceros to Benidorm, then change to line 9 and get off at the Altea stop. It's a two-zone trip and takes around an hour and a half including the change.
Can you get the tram from Alicante to Calpe or Dénia?
Yes, the same way: line 1 to Benidorm, then line 9 north. Calp and Dénia are in zone C, so it's a three-zone fare. Allow about two hours to Calpe and around three to Dénia, depending on the connection.
Does the Alicante tram go to the airport?
No. The airport is served by the C-6 bus. A rail link to the airport is still at the project stage, with Adif tendering design work in autumn 2026.
How much is the tram in Alicante?
Inside the city (zone A) a single is €1.50 from 1 October 2026. One-zone trips outside the city cost €2, and longer trips cost more. A Bono 10 on a Móbilis card is much cheaper per trip.
Do I need to change trams to get to Benidorm?
No. Line 1 runs straight from Luceros to Benidorm. You only change at Benidorm if you're carrying on to Altea, Calpe or Dénia on line 9.
Get a Móbilis card on day one. You'll use it more than you think.
