Torrevieja is on the southern Costa Blanca, about 45 minutes from Alicante airport, and it has one of the biggest international communities in Spain. British, Irish, Scandinavian and many other nationalities live here year round, so it stays lively in winter.
The town sits between two salt lagoons, including the famous pink lake, and has a run of town beaches with chiringuitos along the front. The redeveloped Paseo del Mar has given the waterfront a big lift. La Mata, just north, is quieter and has a long sandy beach.
